Best Practices – which qualification to choose?

Best Practices – which qualification to choose?

Best Practices are abundant in the world of project, programme and portfolio management, also known as P3M. But if you’re not an education professional, how do you know what qualification suits your needs best?

What qualification suits your needs best?

There are several global institutes that offer best practice methods for P3M Professionals. In Europe the AXELOS suite, offering – amongst others – PRINCE2®, MSP® and MoP®, is probably best known. If however you have US roots, you probably know more about PMI Best Practices, including PMP® and CAPM®. Australians have AIPM which is the 2nd largest member of IPMA. So, which one to select?

Selection criterion 1: geography

As I said, a good place to start from is the country of origin of the company you work for. Is it a European based firm, take a look at the AXELOS suite. If you’re working in a US influenced environment, PMI will match your needs. Down under you’ll probably want to check out AIPM.

Selection criterion 2: your P3M level

Another element to review before selecting a Best Practice, is your personal P3M level: are you (or planning to be) a project, programme or portfolio manager? Each level has it’s own Best Practice.

  • Project Manager
    • AXELOS: PRINCE2
    • PMI: PMP or CAPM
    • AIPM: RegPM-CPPM/CPPD or IPMA-D/C/B
  • Programme Manager
    • AXELOS: MSP
    • PMI: PgMP
    • AIPM: RegP-CPPE or IPMA-A
  • Portfolio Manager
    • AXELOS: MoP
    • PMI: PfMP
    • AIPM: RegPM-CPPE or IPMA-A

Selection criterion 3: your training needs

Last, but definitely not least is the matter of your actual training needs. Every Best Practice is in general beneficial for the specified role. However, they all have their own, unique focus and it’s up to you to decide what would fit your needs best.

  • Project Manager
    • AXELOS: PRINCE2: waterfall framework methodology for projects in any branch, of any size, doesn’t cover no soft skills
    • PMI: PMP or CAPM
    • AIPM: RegPM-CPPM/CPPD or IPMA-D/C/B
  • Programme Manager
    • AXELOS: MSP
    • PMI: PgMP
    • AIPM: RegP-CPPE or IPMA-A
  • Portfolio Manager
    • AXELOS: MoP
    • PMI: PfMP
    • AIPM: RegPM-CPPE or IPMA-A
